Uninvited Guest

It was morning by the time we made it back to the MGM Grand. We staggered into the casino, somewhere between still drunk and hungover, with our hair mussed, our bodies smeared with stripper glitter, and our eyes hidden behind sunglasses bought by Astrid from a desert gas station. The loud sounds of the slots were like woodpeckers drumming on my skull. I was so out of it as I staggered through the casino and to the elevators that I almost didn’t notice Olivia Temple and her father before I bumped into them.

I quickly grabbed Charlotte’s hand and pulled her aside. She started to protest, but I pointed to her daughter and husband standing by the elevators.

“That’s no coincidence,” I said. “Do you think Luke told them?”

“No way,” said Charlotte. “There’s no fucking way. He’s on our side.”

“I thought Olivia was done with this shit!” I said.

“She is,” said Mrs. Temple, hiding behind a slot machine as Olivia glanced in our direction.

“So why is she here with your husband?” I demanded.

She was gone so long that I ran out of money and had to sit at the back of the lounge in the MGM Grand watching a David Bowie impersonator do a reasonably good impression as he sang Life on Mars.

I was listening to him sing Space Oddity when I felt a squeeze on my shoulder. I stiffened up, afraid I’d been caught, but it was Charlotte standing over me with a smile.

“Come on, cutie, let’s get out of here,” she said.

Feeling like a fugitive evading cops or maybe spies on the run in a foreign city, we made our way out into the baking Vegas heat and to our waiting rental car. It was a candy red Dodge Challenger Hellcat, with an engine that rumbled with power as Charlotte revved the engine.

“You picked a pretty cool car,” I said, belting myself into the seat beside her.

“Well, what’s the point of spending the money to rent a car and getting a Camry or something?” She threw it into gear and the tears screamed as she peeled out into traffic.

She drove like a maniac. At first I laughed, but she was taking corners so hard that it felt like she was going to put the car up on two wheels.

“You’re going to get pulled over!” I cried.

“I can’t believe Olivia actually showed up!” She snarled through gritted teeth. “And she brought
